Governor William Sherman Jennings proclaimed martial law and dispatched the state troops to keep the peace; local power was restored on May 17.

Jacksonville's architecture is diverse in style. Few buildings in the city center date from before the Great Fire of 1901. Outside of the Midwest, the city has one of the biggest collections of Prairie School-type buildings. With his wonderful works by both the Chicago School, championed by the well-known Louis Sullivan, and the Prairie School of architecture, popularized by Frank Lloyd Wright, Henry John Klutho would come to inspire generations of local designers following the Great Fire of 1901. Jacksonville also has a significant collection of contemporary architecture from the 1950s and 1960s.
