The Most Remarkable Kenmore Appliance Repair Service in Washington
The well-known Washington, D.C., formally the District of Columbia, is the capital of the United States. It is often known as D.C. or just Washington. It is situated on the east bank of the Potomac River, which defines its southwestern and southern borders with Virginia, while its remaining sides share a land boundary with Maryland. The federal district is named after Columbia, a feminine personification of the nation, while the city is named after George Washington, the first president of the United States and a Founding Father. The city is an important world political center since it is home to the United States federal government and numerous international organizations.
The Residence Act, passed on July 9, 1790, authorized the establishment of a national capital on the Potomac River. President George Washington, who signed the bill into law on July 16, was to choose the specific spot. The federal district was originally shaped like a square, with 10 miles (16 kilometers) on each side and a total area of 100 square miles, thanks to property donations from the states of Maryland and Virginia (259 km2).
The district's southern region of Alexandria saw economic collapse in the 1830s, owing in part to congressional indifference. Pro-slavery people believed that abolitionists in Congress would abolish slavery in the area, further weakening the economy. Through a procedure known as retrocession, Alexandrians petitioned Virginia to take back the property it had contributed to creating the district.
In February 1846, the Virginia General Assembly agreed to accept Alexandria's return. On July 9, 1846, Congress decided to restore all of Virginia's lost territory.
By 1870, the district's population had risen to almost 132,000 people, up 75 percent from the previous census. Despite its rapid expansion, Washington nevertheless had dirt roads and poor sanitation. President Ulysses S. Grant declined to contemplate relocating the capital to the west, as several members of Congress proposed.
The Organic Act of 1871, which dissolved the respective charters of Washington and Georgetown, disbanded Washington County, and established a new territorial government for the whole District of Columbia, was enacted by Congress. The term "Washington," which formerly exclusively referred to "the City of Washington, DC," became synonymous with "the District of Columbia" after this.
Washington, D.C. is a metropolis that has been meticulously designed. President George Washington commissioned French-born architect and city planner Pierre (Peter) Charles L'Enfant to build the new capital in 1791. Alexander Ralston, a Scottish surveyor, was enlisted to assist him in laying out the city design. Broad streets and avenues radiate out from rectangles in the L'Enfant Plan, allowing for open space and planting. He based his design on designs provided to him by Thomas Jefferson of towns such as Paris, Amsterdam, Karlsruhe, and Milan. In the area that is now the National Mall, L'Enfant's plan also included a garden-lined "great avenue" that would be 1 mile (1.6 km) long and 400 feet (120 m) wide. Today, Washington residents are now adapting to modernization, which includes taking advantage of home appliances.
